Gira 106 with Unifi Access NFC Reader

I was looking for a new Doorbell at my main entrance. The goal was to include a camera that takes pictures when the doorbell was rang, and is able to make a two way voice connection to talk to the visitors.

In addition I wanted to include a door access system by Ubiquiti called Unifi Access.

And last but not least it had to be a nice design, otherwise my wife would not acknowledge the whole project.

While I was browsing through some options found on the internet, I extended my demands for this system. I did not want to be dependent of any cloud services and it should not be one of the Amazon Alexa or Ring kind of Doorbell, where an ugly piece of Hardware is just bolt next to the door.

The decision was made in favor of the Gira System 106.

It met all mentioned demands but the NFC Entry System. But here my decision was already made for the Unifi Access System. But again, the two kind of NFC Readers by Ubiquiti / Unifi do not meet any design favors I would like to have next to my main door. Thats why I went for a bit more inclusive way by taking the NFC UA Reader apart.

Fortunately the Gira System 106 is build from different modules to choose from. I just ordered an empty module frame to place the NFC Reader into. This way I wanted to stay within the design of the Gira System 106.

While I was taking the NFC Reader apart I was surprised finding four PCBs that are stacked on top of each other by small connectors included within the white housing.

By removing all the plastic parts and just keeping the PCBs they are better qualified to fit into an empty frame that I specially ordered from Gira to fit within the System 106 design.

UPDATE START
Because there were some difficulties in procuring the empty frame by other interested readers of my blog. I ordered these parts at an official GIRA agent who was able to supply just the housing and the Glasfront. It seems that the housing and the plastic back panel of the glas were intended to be used for the “GIRA 5567000 Anzeigemodul“, as you can tell by the key and headset symbol still visible on the back of the glas. But the glas itself has no visible key or headset sign in the front. You might not find this part at an online store but GIRA can definetly help.
UPDATE END

To get them packaged within this empty frame I needed to dremel some parts of the housing so the RJ45 PoE Network connector would fit as well.

For the PCB package I had to add a slight groove to the inner side of the the plastic frame. This way the PCBs fit perfectly into the middle section of the housing.

On top of the PCBs I placed a small foam patch. This supports a tight fit given by the glass panel that is placed on top of this housing. There was no need to hotglue the parts together and let them be still accessible .

This shows the back side of the module with a large cut to fit the PoE Board and the RJ45 connector.

At the end the module gets closed by the glass lid.

The self build NFC module can than be placed into the Gira System 106 matrix and is then ready to get mounted to the wall next to the door.

Because of the 90° Angel that the network connector sits to the PCBs I had to use either the very first or the last spot within the Matrix Frame of the Gira System 106 because there are the cable inlets. Through these I was able to attach the network cable from the rear side just by having a deeper pocket within my wall where the whole set was mounted to.

If you have any questions to my setup, do not hesitate to write a comment.
